Asthma in pets
Asthma is a serious disease of dogs and cats that is characterized by chronic inflammation of the small airways in the lungs called bronchioles. In asthma, these airways thicken and when your pet breathes in, they collapse making it difficult for your pet to catch its breath. In severe cases of asthma, the airways become blocked with mucus and the smooth muscle that surrounds the airways goes into spasm (bronchospasm), restricting breathing.

How will I know if my pet has asthma?
Dogs and cats of any age can get asthma, but it occurs more commonly in cats and in young or middle-aged pets. Asthma is particularly common in Siamese and Himalayan cat breeds. During an episode of asthma you may notice your pet’s breathing is shallow, rapid and laboured. You may also notice that your cat or dog has to put a lot of effort into inhaling and exhaling and you may see the abdomen moving in and out quite dramatically. Pets with severe asthma often show open-mouthed breathing and you may notice a blueish-purple tinge to the tongue and gums due to an oxygen shortage.

A severe asthma attack can be life-threatening and immediate veterinary attention should be sought.

Mild cases of asthma which present as nothing more than a dry, hacking cough may often go unnoticed or may be misdiagnosed as hairballs in cats. Your pet may also develop wheezing, a whistling sound produced by air travelling through narrowed airways. Some pets lose weight and become lethargic. However, most pets with asthma seem quite normal in between attacks. To diagnose asthma, your vet will take a full clinical history and take a chest X-ray. It may also be necessary to collect a sample from the affected airways, this is known as broncho-alveolar lavage and will confirm a diagnosis of asthma as well as provide information about concurrent infections that may be aggravating the asthma attacks.

What causes asthma?
As is the case in humans, episodes of asthma are triggered by allergens or stress. Some common allergens include grass and tree pollens, smoke, fumes, cigarettes, dust from litter trays and aerosols of various sorts such as perfumes, deodorants and flea sprays. In some cats, cold air can trigger an asthma attack. Pets may also be sensitive to certain foods, as well as food additives such as preservatives and colourants. Some holistic vets believe that multiple vaccinations and commercial pet foods can compromise your pet's immune system, making him/her more susceptible to allergies, including asthma.

How is asthma usually treated?
Conventional treatment of asthma in pets usually consists of steroid drugs to reduce inflammation, antihistamines to control the allergic component of asthma and bronchodilators to open up the airways in an attack.

Though these drugs can be effective in preventing asthma attacks and for acute relief, as with most synthetic drugs, long-term side-effects and further reduction in immune system functioning are almost inevitable.

The Natural Way
As in humans, a strong immune system can play a vital role in helping to control pets’ symptoms of asthma and to strengthen the body's defenses against environmental triggers. Herbal and homeopathic asthma treatment can be extremely effective in pets. Depending on the severity of the asthma, they can reduce or even eliminate the need for the synthetic drugs. Natural remedies may also be used to complement conventional treatment of asthma and do so without compromising your pet’s health or causing side effects.

How has AmazaPet helped others?

"AmazaPet is the third remedy I’ve bought from PetAlive for my cat Tabby and I am pleased to report that it is just as effective as the others. PetAlive products have helped her every time without the side-effects she is so sensitive to in vet-prescribed medications. I must also comment on your wonderful customer service and prompt delivery. It is always a pleasure dealing with your company!"
- Shona

"Both of my cats have suffered with asthma for a few years now and I had the fright of my life in March when the younger one had a near-fatal attack. I decided I needed to get their condition under control and did some research online. I found AmazaPet and was a bit nervous at first as I have never used natural remedies for my cats before. I ordered it anyway and wanted to tell you that my cats are so much better since I started giving it to them. AmazaPet really works - thank you so much, it is a real load off my mind now that they are well."
- Jean W.

"My pug has always snuffled a lot which most flat nose dogs do naturally but this was worse and worse especially in the mornings and the evenings when we went for our walks. I became very concerned when he was struggling to breathe and my vet diagnosed asthma! I am a firm believer of your remedies for people and so I figured that I would try your pet asthma remedy which has helped very much. I give my pug two tablets before every walk and he eats them straight from my hand and runs around just like he used to! Thanks very much!"
- B.W.

"My little Tabbypoint female has been on the Vet’s medication for asthma attacks. As she was having at least three, fairly severe attacks before I left for work in the mornings, I felt that I could not just sit back and watch her. The Amazapet arrived within days, and within about two weeks, her attacks are down to one every couple of days. Such a relief. Many thanks, and I am making sure all my pet-loving friends know about your website."
- Margie

She now employs her love of animals, great and small, to the PetAlive family. She hopes to make pet owners aware of the benefits of natural remedies and support naturally healthy, naturally happy pets.
    Cathy's Tips:

  • Seeing your pet battling to breathe can be a very distressing experience, but try and keep calm and avoid stressing your pet any further as this will aggravate the situation.  (Keep a bottle of PetCalm close by for your pet and a bottle of  PureCalm for you).
  • Most asthma attacks will pass relatively quickly but if you notice that your pet’s tongue and gums are blue this is an emergency situation and you need to get your pet to the closest vet without delay
  • Try and remove potential triggers from the environment.  Remember that there may be more than one trigger so remove suspected triggers one at a time and allow 2 to 3 weeks to see if the asthma attacks lessen, by a process of elimination you may be able to determine the trigger
  • Do not expose your pet to smoke, your furry companions should not be passive smokers!! Give up this bad habit, you and your pets can only benefit
  • Minimise the use of aerosols or at least make sure that all creatures with paws are out of the room when you use your hairspray!
  • If you are using conventional medicine try and use the lowest possible dose, this is especially important with corticosteroids which may cause diabetes when used for extended periods
  • Feed a preservative and colourant free diet.  A raw, unprocessed diet is the most natural option for your pet.
  • Keep your pets fit and trim, a walk a day keeps the vet away.
