Caring for your pets these Christmas holidays
'Tis the Season to Keep Your Pets Jolly!

Posted: December 2011

With the holidays upon us, many families are putting their beloved pets into kennels for the festive season. With kennel cough and other illnesses prominent in these facilities, we’ve compiled a list of all that needs to be taken into account. If your pets travel with you to your holiday destination, they should also be kept calm and comfy along the way …

Hard to believe but Christmas is poking its head around the corner - and lots of us will be going away on holiday and spending time with our families. Some of us will be taking our pets along with us. For those that enjoy the car, this is not too much of a problem, but for those pets that get carsick, traveling by car may become a problem for you and them!

Happy Travels

PetAlive EasyTravel Solution is a fabulous remedy for carsick pets. It comes in convenient dissolvable granule form and the tiny granules are easy to administer to pets of all sizes and personalities - simply sprinkle on the back of the tongue and leave to dissolve. No fuss and bother! For many animals, one dose of EasyTravel Solution just before the journey is sufficient to prevent the symptoms of motion sickness. For pets with more severe cases, the dosage may be repeated periodically during the journey.

Home Away From Home

Spare a thought for all the pets that will be spending Christmas in the kennels/cattery or at home with a house sitter. It is very important to choose your kennel/cattery or house sitter carefully. The best method is to actually go to the kennels before the time and check them out personally. Ask lots of questions and inspect the premises personally, paying special attention to the pets that are there as well as to things like cleanliness and fresh food and water.

If you decide to opt for personal pet care within the familiarity of your home, be sure to carefully check all the references given by your house sitter and get a reference from your dog or cat!! If the house sitter comes for the interview and is uneasy around your pets or your dog or cat is uneasy around him/her, then that house sitter is not for you.

Remember that for some dogs, going to the kennel is an exciting and fun time, but for others, and most cats, it is a very stressful time. Some natural help can make all the difference to helping them adjust and cope with unfamiliar surroundings and missing owners! PetAlive Grief and Pining Formula contains a unique combination of specially selected herbal and homeopathic ingredients well known to treat depression and pining and can help to restore emotional well being during periods of trauma, loss or separation. PetAlive Grief and Pining Formula will effectively lift mood and restore vitality, as well as improving your pet's sense of well being and security, making the stay at the kennels/cattery a lot less stressful. Another thing to remember about dogs being in kennels is that they come into contact with large numbers of other dogs and they all spend a lot of time barking and getting to know each other. Unfortunately, this can also put dogs at risk for Kennel Cough and other infections. PetAlive KC-Defence is a natural remedy which combines homeopathic ingredients with selected biochemic tissue salts for the treatment and prevention of Kennel Cough and other respiratory tract infections, helping to protect your dog and ensure holiday health.

Gifts

Christmas is a time of giving gifts and what could be cuter than a puppy or kitten! This may be true – but kittens and puppies should never be bought for a child as a gift. Cats and dogs are living creatures, not commodities.

The decision to add a cat or dog to your home needs to be one made by the whole family as most of the training, feeding, exercising and cleaning up is going to be done by Mom and Dad. You need to be sure you are happy to own a cat or dog for the next 12 - 15 years by which time your children will most likely have left home! The cat or dog should be a family pet and not belong to a child. Everyone in the family can be involved with caring for the pet. Far too many cute baby pets are given to children as gifts – only to find themselves abandoned and unwanted after the festive season has passed. Remember that pets are a full time responsibility – not a chocolate box moment!

To share the Christmas spirit with furry friends, why not make a family donation to animal rescue and welfare organisations to help them to deal with the extra demands they face over the festive season?

The Christmas Tree!!!

To us, a beautiful reminder of Christmas and a place to leave the gifts for Christmas morning – to dogs and cats, twinkly lights and strings of tinsel, which should be pulled and played with and possibly chewed or eaten!

Christmas time provides lots of visitors and new and exciting things to do and eat and this may cause certain pets to forget their manners and join in the festive fun, resulting in chaos and mayhem if not carefully controlled. Help is at hand with PetAlive Problem Pet Solution. Containing selected herbal and homeopathic ingredients known for their calming properties as well as their ability to treat hyperactive, delinquent, overactive and highly strung pets, this natural remedy can help to restore order to hyperactive and destructive pets over the silly season.

Christmas Dinner

We all eat too much and the food is so delicious, but it’s Christmas! Don’t be tempted to feed your pets the rich leftovers and bits of Christmas cake as a treat. Doing so can cause vomiting and diarrhea, due to the offending substance causing an irritation to the lining of the digestive tract.

Despite the best intentions, determined pets may find their way to the Christmas dinner or persuade hapless guests to part with treats by batting their beguiling eyes at them. If your pet suffers from festive tummy troubles, PetAlive Digestive Support is a 100% herbal remedy specially formulated to help pets who suffer from chronic digestive conditions such as gastritis, stomach and duodenal ulcers, oesophagitis, IBS, colitis, enteritis, bloating and other chronic digestive disorders. Digestive Support is also extremely helpful for acute digestive complaints such as gastritis or when your pet has eaten something which does not agree with him/her. Digestive Support contains three carefully chosen herbs in therapeutic dosage to soothe and protect the digestive system.

New Year

Lastly, remember that when we celebrate the advent of the New Year, there are usually fireworks. Some pets are quite able to cope with the noise, but for others it is a disaster and much heartache is caused when pets run away or hurt themselves trying to escape the sound of fireworks.

PetAlive PetCalm contains a special blend of herbal and homeopathic ingredients known for their calming and soothing effect and is especially effective in helping pets to cope with the trauma of fireworks and crowds of people celebrating the advent of the New Year. PetCalm is a natural remedy with no risk of side effects or addiction and can be safely used by animals of all ages and sizes. PetCalm may be used regularly to reduce anxiety and stress in highly strung or chronically anxious pets, or as needed for relief during particularly stressful situations like fireworks.

Here are a few other tips to help your pets cope:
  • Ensure that your pet feels secure, turn up the radio or put on the TV to mask loud noises and provide a warm, cozily lit area for your pet to sleep in.
  • Although it’s a natural urge to comfort your pet during times of distress, by giving your pet attention during a frightening episode such as fireworks, you may actually encourage the nervous behaviour. Try to ignore their anxiety and carry on with as many normal activities as possible – giving the message that all is well and there is no danger.
  • Be consistent with your reaction to your pet. The whole family needs to follow the same routine when dealing with your pet’s anxieties otherwise your pet will become confused and even more insecure.

Happy holidays to you and your furry companions from the PetAlive team!
