About skin parasites
A parasite is an organism that gets its nourishment by feeding either on or within another animal and it is fairly common for our pets to become the unhappy hosts to a number of unwanted organisms. Skin parasites are the external parasites such as ticks, fleas and mites.

Fleas are especially worrisome for pet owners and their pets alike. Getting rid of fleas is no easy task, and sensitive pets may even develop an allergy to flea bites resulting in a condition called flea-bite dermatitis. Other parasites such as sarcoptic mange mites and ticks can be incredibly harmful to our beloved pets, but the good news is that most external parasites can be avoided to a certain extent with preventative treatments and thorough grooming.

Skin parasites like fur mites, ear mites, fleas and other tiny organisms are a common source of skin problems in dogs, such as dry, flaky skin and itching. Skin parasites can also lead to chronic skin infections, canine skin sores and patches of fur loss in dogs and other pets. Mange is a particularly unsightly and uncomfortable skin condition that is caused by a variety of mange mites. These little eight-legged parasites can become a serious problem for pets as they live on and sometimes burrow into the skin causing a number of skin problems. Different types of mange cause different symptoms, however, the condition is often characterized by hair-loss, skin irritation, inflammation and itchiness. In some cases the skin can become crusty and scabbed and may even ooze and crack.

Symptoms of skin parasites in both cats and dogs include:

  • Itchy skin
  • Frequent scratching and licking
  • Skin sores and scabs (or open bleeding patches)
  • Skin scaling
  • Dandruff, White Flakes
  • Black dirt-like dots on the skin
  • Skin redness
  • Skin inflammation
  • Hair loss
  • Thin fur
  • Dull fur
  • Coarse fur

Ditch the dirt!
It doesn’t take a lot for a dog to get dirty, that’s for sure! In fact, dogs are perfectly happy when their skin and fur are well coated with their natural scents and oils. Excess dirt though, can be uncomfortable for your dog (and attract unwanted pests) and so bathing is best. Be careful not to over wash, as this will strip the coat of natural oils. Most dogs should be bathed once every two months. Speak to your vet about the best bathing schedule, some breeds may have sensitive skin and require less bathing. (See our bathing tips below).

The Natural Way
There is a lot that can be done naturally to help keep your pet’s hair and skin clear. It is always a good idea to brush your pet thoroughly every day as this will help remove dirt and help spread natural oils throughout the coat (it also prevents nasty tangles from forming). An easy way to keep dogs clean is to dust their coats with a mixture of cornstarch and baby powder, and brush it through. It may sound odd, but the powder readily ‘soaks up’ skin oils and helps eliminate the usual "doggy" smell. For longer lasting fresh smelling coats, a natural shampoo or spray can be used.

How has PetAlive Manage Mites Shampoo helped others?
“… We have such fun washing our German Shepherds. They used to be very sensitive to other medicinal shampoos, but this does the trick nicely. They smell wonderful afterwards, and don’t seem to mind it at all! We can tell that it’s really gentle, but still works.”
- The Anderson Family

“This dog shampoo works wonderfully. I have three poodles that once in a while manage to get so terribly dirty and gritty. I use it, and won’t use any other product in future. I have used your PetAlive Clean Cat Shampoo and I am just as impressed - Thanks!”
- Shanna

“I use this dog shampoo in conjunction with his vet medication to rid my dog of other issues. In my opinion it has really helped keep my Bulldog, Bernie, clean and cleansed...”
- Petra Simon

What are the Ingredients?
PetAlive Manage Mites Shampoo contains the following 100% natural herbal ingredients especially selected to support cleansing and skin health:
  • Agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria) – The applicable parts of agrimony are the dried, above ground parts. The aerial plant arts contain 4-10% condensed tannins, which can account for its astringent properties. It has been researched for its ability to support skin health (Patrascu V, Chebac PI. “Favorable therapeutic results in cutaneous porphyria obtained with Agrimonia eupatoria”. Revista De Medicina Interna Neurologie Psihiatrie Neurochirurgie Dermato Venerologie Serie Dermato Venerologia 1984;29(2):153-157).
  • Garlic (Allium sativum L.) - Garlic is a member of the lily family, which also includes hyacinth, tulip, onion, leek, and chives. It has also been studied for its possible ability to discourage pests and promote healthy skin (Ankri S, Mirelman D. Antimicrobial properties of allicin from garlic. Microbes Infect 1999;1(2):125-129). (Stjernberg L, Berglund J. “Garlic as an insect repellent”. JAMA 2000;284(7):831.).
  • Wormwood – This herb has been researched for it’s ability to support healthy flora on the skin (Juteau, F., Jerkovic, I., Masotti, V., Milos, M., Mastelic, J., Bessiere, J. M., and Viano, J. “Composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of Artemisia absinthium from Croatia and France”. Planta Med 2003;69(2):158-161).
  • Neem (Azadirachta indica) - Neem is thought to have originated in Assam in northeast India, and Myanmar, where it is common throughout the central dry zone. I has been researched for its ability to discourage pests (Sharma, S. K., Dua, V. K., and Sharma, V. P. “Field studies on the mosquito repellent action of neem oil”. Southeast Asian J.Trop.Med.Public Health 1995;26(1):180-182.)
  • Niaoli essential oil - The niaouli is an evergreen tree with pointed leaves and spiky long yellow flowers. The leaves of the evergreen are extremely fragrant when crushed.
  • Lemongrass essential oil (Cymbopogon spp.) - Lemongrass oil has been found to contain up to 75-85% citral components. It has been studied for its ability to support cleansing (El Kamali, H. H., Hamza, M. A., and El Amir, M. Y. “Antibacterial activity of the essential oil from Cymbopogon nervatus inflorescence”. Fitoterapia 2005;76(5):446-449).
  • Shampoo base ingredients: Aqua, coconut oil, castor oil, olive oil, potassium hydroxide, ethanol, glycerine, grapefruit extract, lactic acid.

Our products are not tested on animals and individual ingredients are well-researched and are natural, safe and effective. This product contains absolutely no parabens, sodium laurel sulphate or harmful petrochemicals.

    Cathy's Tips:

    Handy tips for dog bathing:

  • Place a rubber mat in your bathtub for secure footing.
  • Place a cotton ball in each of your dog’s ears to prevent water from entering (make sure they do not get stuck too far in the ear.
  • Rinse your dog with warm water (check the temperature carefully).
  • Use a spray hose if one is available (be sure to keep the nozzle very close to your dog’s body). Never spray him or her in the face.
  • Apply a shampoo designed especially for dogs in small amounts, working from the head to the tail.
  • Be sure to clean the rectum, between the toes, behind the ears and under the chin.
  • Try to avoid getting shampoo in your dog’s eyes.
  • Thoroughly rinse your dog with warm water (this is very important).
  • Dry your dog with a towel and/or hair dryer (on the lowest setting).
  • Turn the dryer on while pointing away from the dog to get him/her used to the noise. Then slowly direct the dryer towards your dog and start gently drying him/her.
  • When your dog is dried, or mostly dry, you can brush him/her out.
