Supple joints for fluid movement
Horses rely greatly on fluid movement and suppleness in both everyday exercise and riding in and out of competition. Horse joints may become commonly stiff and sore through lack of movement or if joints are susceptible to injury. There are three different classifications of joints – fibrous joints, cartilaginous joints, and synovial joints. Cartilaginous joints have limited movement and are responsible for extending bone length during a horse's growing years. Synovial joints are most vulnerable because they are the most active joints in the horse's body. It is this cartilage within the joint that is so smooth and resilient. When properly lubricated, the cartilage enables frictionless movement of the joint. Friction poses a great threat to joint health in horses. Lubrication is key - the joint capsule contains an inner lining (synovial membrane) that secretes synovial fluid to lubricate the joint. A horse’s forelimbs bear 65% of the horse's weight and are subjected to greater pressure when moving at speed. With competition horses the heavy stress shifts to the rear limbs. Resting on top of a horse’s knee is the radius. For this joint to function at its peak and remain sound, correct symmetrical alignment is necessary. Inappropriate alignment puts stress on the structures even at the walk. If a horse with poor alignment in the joint is traveling at speed, performing athletic maneuvers, or going over jumps, the joint stress is greatly magnified.

The Natural Way
There is a lot that can be done naturally to promote joint fluidity and lessen stiffness. Make sure that your horse has proper shoeing, as improper shoeing can put joints and muscles at great risk for stiffness and soreness as well as injury (check your Farrier's credentials). If your horse has healthy joints, maintain portions of daily movement of your horse to improve muscle tone and promote circulation of lymph fluid. A horse should maintain a healthy weight to lessen the strain on limbs and joints. Lastly, always opt to rest a horse that has joint difficulty rather than continue on with a stress point.

What is EQuine Joint Relief?
EQuine Joint Relief is a 100% safe and natural homeopathic remedy that uses ingredients known for their ability to support healthy joints in horses, as well as help facilitate easy fluid movement and suppleness. What are the Ingredients?
EQuine Joint Relief contains the following homeopathic ingredients in therapeutic dosages and equal parts:
  • Apis (6C) – homeopathic remedy used to support routine removal and drainage of excess fluid from joints and tissues.
  • Rhus tox (30C) – this remedy supports fibrous tissue - joints, tendons, sheaths – and can address common pains and stiffness. This remedy suits those horses that tend to "limber up" with motion.
  • Ferrum phos (6X) – this remedy has been used homeopathically to address inflammations on the limbs, and suits those horses that are robust, but nervous and sensitive in nature.
  • Nat phos (6X) - this biochemic tissue salt is found naturally in muscles, nerves and intracellular fluid. It is also used homeopathically for conditions arising from excess of lactic or uric acid in the joints and helps to address swollen hocks or knee joints.
  • Arnica (6C) – this is a well-known homeopathic remedy used after a traumatic injury or simple strain. This remedy is suited to those horses that seem to improve with the head down and worsen in damp weather.
  • Calc fluor (6X) – this is the nutritive tissue salt for attachment of muscles, tendons and ligaments. It is also used to maintain soft and growing tissues.
  • Sucrose (inactive ingredient).

EQuine Joint Relief contains no gluten, artificial flavours, colours or preservatives.

    Cathy's Tips:

Excessive body weight can greatly influence the amount of strain forced on joints. It is important then to make sure your horse maintains a healthy weight.

    Here are some tips:

  • Make changes to your horse’s diet with the guidance of a veterinarian.
  • Do not reduce rations more than 10% over a 7 to 10 day period.
  • Make sure your horse gets an adequate, moderate, regular exercise regimen.
  • Provide clean, fresh water to promote digestion, metabolism and waste removal in the body.
  • Choose high quality fiber feeds that are low in total energy.
  • Replace lucerne with mature grass or oat hay.
  • Make sure your horse's diet is age-appropriate and relative to activity level. All vitamin, mineral and protein requirements MUST be met. A supplement may be added.
