What is flea bite dermatitis?
Fleas are an extremely common parasite among dogs and cats. Some pets suffer very little from the bites of these creatures but a number of less fortunate pets develop an allergic reaction to flea saliva, leading to a severe skin reaction known as flea bite dermatitis. Fleas bite their host animal and suck the blood for nutrition, leaving saliva behind under the pet’s skin. Recent scientific studies have shown that flea saliva contains around 15 different allergens that can cause reactions in sensitive dogs and cats.
The common problem of flea bite dermatitis affects both cats and dogs of all ages, genders and breeds. In pets with this condition, the flea bites themselves generally become red, swollen and severely itchy. This leads to chronic inflammation and scratching of the skin as well as ongoing discomfort for your pet.
How do I know whether my pet has flea bite dermatitis?
Dogs and cats with flea bite dermatitis generally show signs of chronic biting, scratching and rubbing their skin, especially around the base of the tail. This may, in turn, lead to hair loss and thinning of the coat. The skin may appear red and inflamed. A flea allergy will also be noticeably seasonal and cause worse symptoms during summer and fall when fleas are most prolific. Cats may develop multiple small scabs all over their body, a condition known as miliary dermatitis.
How is flea bite dermatitis usually treated?
To get to the root cause of this condition it is important to rid your pet of fleas entirely. Many flea-control products available in pet-stores including flea collars, sprays and shampoos are very effective when used regularly. The flea population is not limited to your pet, for each flea that you see on your pet there are a hundred more in the environment. The greater part of the flea lifecycle takes place in your home and eggs, larvae and adult fleas will all be found in your carpets and anywhere else in your house that your pet might have access to. It is therefore crucial that you treat the house as well as your pet. Wash all bedding on a hot wash cycle and hang out in the sunshine to dry. Treat the house with a veterinary approved spray that will have a residual effect and kill off any nasty fleas that hatch from any eggs.
For treating your pet’s skin that has already suffered the ravages of flea bite dermatitis, topical hydrocortisone products are usually used for dermatitis, but these can cause adverse side-effects, especially when used regularly. Prolonged use of cortisone can actually delay wound healing.
The Natural Way
Pet wounds and skin irriationsare often treated with antibiotics - taken internally or applied as a cream to the skin in order to prevent infection. They may also be treated with topical corticosteroid creams. While these can be effective in the short term, many holistic vets believe that they may also compromise your pet's health by affecting immune functioning. Topical antibiotic, corticosteroid and antiseptic creams are also often licked off by pets and can contain substances that may not be good for them to ingest.
Certain herbs and homeopathic ingredients are excellent for soothing pain and reducing irritation of minor skin injuries and skin allergies. Gentle promotion of natural healing, as well as prevention of infection (without antibiotics) has been practiced by herbalists for thousands of years and can be of great benefit to your pet. Herbal and homeopathic ingredients have no side effects, making them a safe alternative to prescription creams and ointments.
What is PetAlive FleaDerm?

How has PetAlive FleaDerm helped others?
"Cassie, my youngest cat, has a severe allergy to flea bites and her suffering during the warmer months was terrible to see. Although I always use every available product to keep her clear of fleas, it just takes a chance encounter with one flea (A common occurrence in a house with lots of pets) and she would be in agony for weeks. I used your FleaDerm for her and wanted to let you know what a wonderful difference it has made to her skin- it soothed the flea bites quickly and really seemed to relieve the itching. Within about a week the area had almost completely healed. Thank you- I am re-ordering this product today!"

"Your PetAlive FleaDerm remedy has helped my Staffie so much! In the past she used to spend half her day scratching and biting at her skin - even rubbing against trees and other rough surfaces she could find - to the point that her skin became red, raw and weepy. Her hair started to fall out and she ended up with little bald patches all over her! After embarking on an intensive flea-ridding program as well as using your FleaDerm cream on her skin the situation has almost completely resolved. I must just wait a few more weeks for hair to grow back properly now! It is fantastic to see her comfortable and playful again - thanks for a wonderful remedy!"

What are the Ingredients?
PetAlive FleaDerm contains the following 100% natural, herbal and homeopathic ingredients in an aqueous cream base:
Matricaria recutita (German Chamomile) was regarded by ancient Anglo-Saxons as one of the nine sacred herbs given to the world. In modern times it is widely used as a gentle cleansing, anti-inflammatory and soothing herb.
Galium aperine (Cleavers) is a herb which has been used in folk medicine for many centuries as a cleansing tonic and lymphatic cleanser and blood purifier. Regular use helps to expel toxins from the body and therefore assist in the treatment of chronic skin conditions such as eczema and allergic dermatitis.
Calendula officinalis (Marigold) is a herbal ingredient used to treat skin problems and promote healing of wounds. It is an excellent anti-inflammatory and prevents infection with its anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties. Marigold has been shown to assist the regeneration of damaged skin tissue and encourages new bloodvessel formation in injured tissue.
Hamamelis virginianum (Witchhazel) is excellent for reducing inflammation, bleeding and pain. It has long been used by Native Americans to relieve the pain, swelling, bruising, & bleeding of external injuries. Witchhazel also has anti-bacterial properties which help to prevent infection.
Graphites (30C) This homeopathic remedy is beneficial for skin ailments, such as chronic skin sores, dermatitis, slow healing wounds and scar tissue. Also widely used to treat severely dry and cracked skin due to its excellent skin conditioning properties.
PetAlive FleaDerm contains no gluten, artificial flavours, colours or preservatives.

She now employs her love of animals, great and small, to the PetAlive family. She hopes to make pet owners aware of the benefits of natural remedies and support naturally healthy, naturally happy pets.
Cathy’s Tips:
Fleas flourish in moist, warm conditions and are often a problem in the coastal areas.
Each female flea will lay 20 eggs at each time which means that in her lifetime she will lay between 400 and 500 eggs ( 1 flea has the potential to produce 500 fleas!!!!!)
During unfavourable conditions such as cold winters the pupae stage of the lifecycle may survive for several months and the adult flea can go without a bloodmeal for several months, (no wonder these are tough little critters to get rid of).
As if causing itchy, painful bites on your pet wasn’t bad enough, these jumping insects also transmit tapeworm. So, remember to de-worm your pet at the same time as treating for fleas. See PetAlive Parasite Dr. for more information.
As a conscientious, holistic pet owner you are no doubt aware of the potential side effects of using topical pesticides on your furry friend in order to control fleas. Unfortunately in cases of severe flea allergy dermatitis, the pesticide is the lesser evil as all the FleaDerm in the world will bring your pet no relief if those pesky fleas keep on biting. Please use a veterinary prescribed flea repellent and follow directions closely.
