What is Biliary/Babiosis/Tick Fever and what are the symptoms?
Biliary is an infectious tick-borne disease that affects dogs and cats and is caused by a blood parasite, Babesia canis (in dogs) and Babesia felis (in cats). Babesia is a single cell parasite which divides and multiplies in red blood cells. The red blood cells are destroyed when the parasites are released into the bloodstream where they subsequently infect further red blood cells. This destruction of red blood cells results in anaemia and may be fatal if left untreated.

Infected animals are classically listless, have a poor appetite, a high fever, rapid breathing and a characteristic water-hammer pulse with pale mucous membranes due to the anaemia. In advanced cases, jaundice may develop due to liver damage and the gums, whites of the eyes and skin take on a yellowish hue.

Confirmation of Biliary is obtained by identifying parasites on a blood smear. The incubation period between infection and the onset of symptoms is six to twenty one days and relapses may occur after treatment.

What is the conventional treatment?
The conventional treatment of Biliary involves specific agents which destroy or suppress the specific blood parasites. Your pet may also need fluid therapy and if too many red blood cells have been destroyed a life-saving blood transfusion may be indicated. Biliary is a serious, life-threatening disease and requires prompt, intensive veterinary treatment if complications are to be avoided. The adage “prevention is better than cure” is an absolute for Biliary and certainly in high risk areas the disadvantages of using tick repellants on your pets are far outweighed by the potential heartache that you may experience and the suffering that your pet may endure in the event of contracting this often fatal disease. Use a veterinary approved tick repellant and follow the instructions carefully.

What is Ehrlichiosis and Haemobartonellosis and what are the symptoms?
Ehrlichiosis is a tick-borne disease of dogs that affects the white blood cells in your dog’s body. It is caused by a parasite called Ehrlichia canis which can be seen on a blood smear during certain stages of the disease. This tends to be a chronic disease and is characterised by anaemia, enlarged lymph nodes and an enlarged spleen. Infected dogs tend to be listless and may have minor bleedings of the skin and mucous membranes. In chronic cases, marked suppression of the bone marrow occurs and the prognosis for survival is poor. Ehrlichiosis is common in all dogs, especially in spring and summer when ticks are active. As for biliary, prevention is better than cure so use a veterinary approved tick repellant as required.

Haemobartonellosis is an infectious blood disease of cats (and on rare occasions dogs), affecting the red blood cells in the body. It is caused by a parasite known as Haemobartonella felis which is thought to be transmitted by cat bites and possible also insect bites such as flea bites. Infected animals sometimes show no clinical signs but remain carriers and are therefore a risk to other pets. Signs of an active disease include fever, lethargy, anaemia, weakness, vomiting and occasionally jaundiced mucous membranes. Diagnosis is confirmed by a blood smear and conventional treatment includes an extended course of antibiotics and in severe cases a blood transfusion may be needed.

The Natural Way
As part of a holistic approach to treating your pet, natural remedies can help to build and strengthen your pet's immune system, encourage the elimination of toxins and generally improve the overall health of your animal. All vital components of the recuperation journey following any parasitic disease of the blood cells.

Used in conjunction with conventional treatment they can lessen the toxic effects of conventional medication and shorten your pet’s recovery time. Natural remedies have been proven to enhance liver function and protect the liver from further damage. In any parasitic, blood disease the liver is placed under huge amounts of strain as it deals with all the toxins released when blood cells are broken down by the parasites.

What is PetAlive TF-Defence?
TF-Defence combines herbal and homeopathic ingredients which are known to assist in the effective recovery from Biliary and other parasitic infections of the blood in pets. It will also help to strengthen immune system functioning to help your pet fight against the infection.

TF-Defence may also be used along with conventional veterinarian treatment to aid in recovery from parasitic infections of the blood.

How has PetAlive TF-Defence helped others?
"The best thing about treatment with natural remedies is that they work for the problem but also help other areas. Although our dog was very ill, she has responded very quickly to the TF-Defense and seems to be better after recovery than she was before her illness. There is just something about her energy levels and shiny coat that is different! Friends of ours treated their dog with antibiotics alone and he has been ill ever since."
- Mandy

"We used TF-Defense along with antibiotic treatment for Lyme Disease although at first our vet thought that we were wasting our time. He has changed his attitude after the full recovery and we have continued with the Immunity and Liver Support with his blessing! There has been such a quick recovery with no lingering illness as is usually the case."
- Mike M.

"Give me natural treatment anytime. I use it for myself and it is so wonderful to find a company doing the same thing for our animals! Your TF-Defense has been wonderful and helped our dog to recover after she contracted Lyme disease while on vacation. I will always be grateful for the kind and prompt support!"
- Lydia

What are the Ingredients?
PetAlive TF-Defence contains the following 100% herbal and homeopathic ingredients:

Silybum marianus (Milk Thistle) is regarded as one of the most important herbal liver tonics and restoratives. Medical use of Milk Thistle may be traced back more than 2000 years. More recently, Milk Thistle has been subject to many clinical trials which clearly demonstrate its effectiveness. Scientific analysis of Milk Thistle shows that it contains a flavonoid complex called silymarin, which is largely responsible for the medical benefits of this herb. Silymarin is a powerful anti-oxidant and can block the entrance of toxins into the liver and remove toxins at the cellular level, thereby resulting in regeneration of liver cells and improved liver functioning. This would have a direct impact on overall systemic health as the liver is one of the most important organs in the body and is often affected by Lyme Disease which leads to further weakening of the system

Crotalus hor. (200C) is a proven homeopathic remedy which is very effective for the treatment of any illness that includes hemorrhage as well as severe septic infections, especially when there is a breakdown of red blood cells (leading to severe strain on the liver and possible jaundice.)

China (6C) is a homeopathic remedy well known for its beneficial effect on fever and exhaustion, especially following illness or severe fluid loss. It is also a very effective remedy for malaria.

Ferrum Phosphate (D6) (Ferrum Phos.) is one of the most important biochemic tissue salts to use when there is any infection or inflammation in the body. It helps to distribute iron and oxygen throughout the body, strengthen cell walls and fight infection.

Aconite (6C) is a homeopathic remedy which is often used to treat conditions of shock and anxiety. It is also prescribed for otherwise healthy pets who develop a sudden illness of acute nature, often accompanied by fever, fear, anxiety and panic attacks.

How do I use PetAlive TF-Defence?
PetAlive TF-Defence comes in convenient dissolvable granule form. The tiny granules are easy to administer to pets of all sizes and personalities and are simply sprinkled on the back of the tongue and left to dissolve. No fuss and bother!

Cats and very small dogs: Large pinch of granules sprinkled into the mouth.
Small to medium dogs: Two pinches sprinkled into the mouth.
Medium to large dogs: 1/4 cap of granules sprinkled into the mouth.

Administer every hour for up to 10 doses or until improvement is noted. Thereafter administer three times daily for approximately 7 - 10 days.

In the case of chronic illness, we strongly recommend PetAlive Immunity and Liver Support and PetAlive Energy Tonic, depending on your pet's specific needs.

NOTE: Please consult your homeopathic or holistic vet for proper diagnosis if you suspect that your pet may have a parasitic blood infection. Home treatment of these serious illnesses is not recommended.

How long until I see results?
In the case of acute illness, the use of TF-Defence often results in rapid results within a few days and a notably shortened recovery time.

Treatment should be continued for 7 days after the disappearance of the acute stage of the illness. This can be followed by supportive treatment with Immunity and Liver Support capsules as well as other remedies like Energy Tonic or LiverAid.

How long will a bottle last?
One bottle of TF-Defence will last for approximately 15 - 60 days, depending on the size and needs of your pet.

Cathy Samuel is our friendly PetAlive product consultant! Cathy has many years experience working with animals here and overseas. She now employs her love of animals, great and small, to the PetAlive family. She hopes to make pet owners aware of the benefits of natural remedies and support naturally healthy, naturally happy pets.
Sr. Cathy’s advice on preventing tick-borne diseases and other parasitic disease in your pet:

  • Prevention is better than cure. Check your pets carefully and regularly for ticks especially after they have been walking in potentially tick-infested areas such as long grass
  • Judicious use of veterinary approved tick repellants is advisable in animals that live in high risk areas.  Your indoor kitty is very unlikely to pick up a tick but your dog that spends its days charging through the veld may well be a tick taxi
  • Support your pet’s liver with LiverAid in the case of an infection and make sure that you feed a natural, unprocessed diet to aid with recovery
  • To minimise your pet’s chances of contracting one of these nasty diseases boost their immune system with regular doses of Immunity and Liver Support.
